Spring Training in Scottsdale: Sunrise

“I had to get up at 6 in the morning, because that’s sun up. And I got THEM to get up, which I’m pretty impressed with.” The trick was to get Roger Craig to okay it. He got up before the sun comes up anyways, so he didn’t really care. He told the other two guys to show up, and well, they did.

Greek Theatre at UC Berkley

It’s a fairly small venue to be playing in, and they didn’t even fill half of it. Stevie Ray Vaughan was basically nobody at this point. So, I get there and I start talking to the box office woman, and I say, “Who is this guy? I’d heard some of his stuff but now I’m hearing he played with David Bowie before?” and she said, “Yeah, I don’t know either, but he’s really ugly. “He was really good though, in Texas he’s very popular and somewhere under God. “

THE STORY BEHIND THE PHOTO: R. CRUMB

“HE WAS JUST BIZARRE...”

Signing books at a pizza place in Berkley, CA

Whoever was doing the publicity for the whole thing, invited a reporter and me to go. The reporter was there, trying to ask R. Crumb questions, but there was a guy sitting next to him who would not let her ask anything. So, what would happen was she would say, “can you ask him if...” whatever the question was, and the guy would turn and say whatever she had just asked. Only then would R. Crumb answer, and then the guy would turn back to her and answer her. “It was like an English interpreter for someone who’s like three feet away.” R. Crumb wouldn’t answer a question directly, it had to be done through this guy.
